Narendra Modi Outlines AI Roadmap for India Water Security

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a national summit in New Delhi to establish a permanent mechanism for water security and cooperative federalism.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the valedictory session of a two-day National Departmental Summit on Water in New Delhi on September 2, 2026. Organized by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the summit sought to deepen cooperative federalism between the central government, states, and union territories through a Team India approach to water security.

Modi called for the adoption of artificial intelligence to ensure uniform and robust water data governance. His proposed roadmap includes making de-silting a regular program, improving dam safety preparedness before monsoons, and integrating water management into university curricula. He also urged the promotion of Jal Utsav to transform water conservation into a sustained people's movement and called for the sensitization of urban local bodies regarding the challenges of rapid urbanization.

Union Minister for Jal Shakti CR Patil identified four primary outcomes of the summit. These include accelerating water infrastructure projects, strengthening conservation movements, ensuring the sustainability of drinking-water sources, and institutionalizing the maintenance of rural schemes under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0.
