Modi Forges Strategic Alliances Across Indo-Pacific and Indian Ocean

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted strategic visits to Seychelles, Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand to expand defense, economic, and cultural ties across the Indo-Pacific region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted a series of strategic foreign visits between July 1 and July 12, 2026, targeting the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific regions. Following an initial trip to Seychelles from July 1 to 3, Modi visited Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand starting July 6. These efforts culminated in a strategic alliance linking the western and eastern ends of the Indian Ocean to serve India's national interests.

In Indonesia, Modi held the first high-level meetings under President Prabowo Subianto to strengthen the Indian-Indonesian Strategic Partnership. The two nations agreed to scale bilateral trade, which totaled $38 billion last year, and aligned geostrategic interests concerning China and economic multipolarity within BRICS. A significant security milestone was the confirmation that India will sell Russian-produced BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to Indonesia, a deal formally approved by Russia. Modi also visited the 10th-century Prambanan Temple to highlight shared civilizational ties.

On July 12, Bharatiya Janata Party MP Sambit Patra detailed ten key outcomes of these visits, termed 'Das Kadam, Das Ka Dam,' during a press conference in New Delhi. Patra described the diplomatic push as a "massive bridge" spanning strategic, economic, and ideological spheres. The outcomes include expanded cooperation in maritime security, critical minerals, energy security, and digital public infrastructure.
