Indian Minister Meets Sri Lankan JVP Delegation to Strengthen Ties
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with a Sri Lankan JVP delegation to pledge support for the island nation's economic recovery and deepen political ties.
Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with a five-member delegation from Sri Lanka's ruling Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) on October 1, 2026. The meeting concluded a five-day visit that began on September 27, during which the delegation, led by General Secretary Tilvin Silva, sought to strengthen engagement between the JVP and India's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
During the interaction, Jaishankar reaffirmed India's role as a trusted partner and pledged unwavering support for Sri Lanka's progress, prosperity, and economic recovery. The diplomatic engagement marks a shift in the stance of the National People’s Power, which had previously resisted India.
The partnership focuses on critical areas including trade, infrastructure, energy connectivity, and maritime security in the Indian Ocean. The visit was designed to facilitate the exchange of organizational experiences and deepen ties between the two political parties.
