Brazil Increases Bolsa Familia Benefits Ahead of October Election

Planning Minister Bruno Moretti announced a 15% increase in cash transfers for the Bolsa Familia welfare program on September 17. The measure raises the minimum monthly benefit from 600 reais to 691 reais for households with a per capita monthly income of up to 218 reais.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is seeking re-election in October amid polling that shows a close race with right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro. The expansion of the social welfare program aligns with the agenda of the Workers' Party.

The fiscal cost of the initiative is estimated at 5.8 billion reais ($1.13 billion) for 2026 and 22 billion reais for 2027. Finance Minister Dario Durigan stated that the spending will be absorbed within existing budget allocations to ensure the country maintains its fiscal targets.
