UK Allocates £7 Million for Northern England Olympic Bid Study

Chancellor John Healey is funding a feasibility study to explore hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in northern England during the 2040s.

Chancellor John Healey is allocating £7 million in his first budget to fund a comprehensive feasibility study for a potential bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in northern England in the 2040s. The study will evaluate venue requirements, transport infrastructure, costs, and the overall likelihood of a successful bid.

The initiative is a collaborative effort involving the government, UK Sport, northern mayors, and the British Olympic and Paralympic Associations. Prime Minister Andy Burnham and other regional leaders support the move, arguing that hosting the Games would unlock opportunities across northern towns and cities and allow communities to experience the event locally rather than through television.

While sporting bodies and elite athletes have welcomed the proposal, the plan faces political opposition. London Mayor Sadiq Khan criticized the exclusion of London as a missed opportunity, and Shadow Sports Minister Louie French questioned the use of taxpayer funds given the current economic climate and rising everyday costs.
