Trump Administration Reaches Record Border Patrol Staffing Levels

The United States Customs and Border Protection announced that the U.S. Border Patrol reached a historic staffing peak of 21,471 agents in spring 2026, the highest level in the agency's 102-year history. This growth followed the January 2025 inauguration of Donald Trump, whose administration implemented hiring incentives, competitive salaries, and the One Big Beautiful Bill Act to attract veterans and military families. Former Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks led a recruitment surge that reduced restrictive internal policies from 1,693 to fewer than 400, while new agents in eligible locations received bonuses up to $60,000.

U.S. Border Patrol Chief Rosario Pete Vasquez stated the agency is now working toward a goal of 25,000 agents. This expansion occurs as the government reports the deportation of nearly 900,000 noncitizens since January 2025. President Trump intends to increase spending beyond the $23 billion fiscal 2026 budget to further expand the workforce and the southern border wall.

Simultaneously, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security reported that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has arrested more than 10,000 migrant gang members since January 20, 2025. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin attributed these arrests, which target groups like MS-13 and Tren de Aragua, to the $70 billion Secure America Act passed by Congress in June 2026. These operations have spanned multiple states, including Virginia, California, and Colorado.
