Tech Leaders Join G20 Meeting to Shape AI Regulations

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios have organized a tech-focused G20 ministerial meeting in North Carolina beginning September 1. The event serves as a precursor to the G20 summit that Donald Trump will host in December at Doral, Florida.

The meeting aims to establish the Carolina Principles, a non-binding framework designed to encourage G20 members to adopt a lighter-touch regulatory approach to emerging technologies, specifically artificial intelligence. This proposed framework advises policymakers against the creation of new regulatory bodies, instead favoring sector-specific approaches and increased collaboration between governments and private industry to foster innovation.

Several prominent industry leaders are scheduled to participate in the discussions. Elon Musk will speak virtually on the first day, while Sam Altman and Jensen Huang are slated to speak on the second day.
