Houthi Rebels Declare Blockade of Bab el-Mandeb Strait

Houthi rebels in Yemen declared a blockade of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait on Tuesday, targeting vessels linked to Saudi Arabia. The movement claims the move is retaliation for a Saudi blockade of Yemen and a recent Saudi airstrike on the international airport in Sanaa, which allegedly targeted Houthi leaders returning from the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Iran.

The Houthis report forcing six ships to reroute and intend to enforce the blockade using naval mines, drones, and helicopters. This escalation threatens 12% of global trade and critical oil supplies, particularly as the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted by an ongoing war involving Iran. Some shipping companies have already begun rerouting vessels around Africa to avoid the region.

Donald Trump, President of the United States, dismissed the threat but stated the U.S. would intervene if international navigation is obstructed. Saudi Arabia's military has vowed to keep the strait open, with spokesperson Turki Al-Malki characterizing the Houthi actions as maritime piracy. The situation increases pressure on U.S. naval resources and interceptor missile stockpiles as the United States continues to contain Iranian military activities in the region.
