Trump's $1M-$5M Kura Sushi Stake Raises Conflict Concerns

President Donald Trump disclosed a $1M-$5M investment in Kura Sushi USA, sparking conflict-of-interest concerns and speculation the purchase was a mistake.

Donald Trump disclosed a purchase of between $1 million and $5 million in Kura Sushi USA stock, a conveyor belt sushi chain, made on February 2, 2026. The investment was revealed through a periodic transaction report published by the U.S. Office of Government Ethics on May 14 and quickly drew public scrutiny.

The Kura Sushi purchase was part of a massive first-quarter trading spree. Initial reports cited approximately 3,600 transactions involving securities and municipal bonds, a figure later updated to more than 3,700 trades totaling between $220 million and $750 million. The portfolio included positions in major companies such as Nvidia, Amazon, and Apple, spanning sectors like big tech, defense, and pharmaceuticals.

The sushi chain investment immediately sparked speculation that it may have been an error, with observers suggesting the intended targets were similarly named companies like Kura Oncology or FujiKura. Trump's known dislike of raw fish further fueled doubts about the deliberate nature of the purchase. Conflict-of-interest concerns also surfaced due to the timing of other portfolio trades.

Following the disclosure, Kura Sushi USA's stock climbed more than 6%, while its Japanese parent company saw gains exceeding 5%. The Trump Organization stated that the president's assets are managed independently by third-party financial institutions and that neither Trump nor his family is involved in trading decisions. Vice President JD Vance joined the defense, reinforcing that independent financial advisors exclusively control the portfolio without input from Trump or his family.
