Alberta Premier Smith Seeks Trade Ties Amid Pipeline Conflict

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith met with the Haisla Nation and the District of Kitimat on November 25, 2025, to discuss transporting Alberta goods, including ammonia and potash, to the coast. The talks centered on expanding trade and mitigating the impact of U.S. tariffs, but highlighted a significant divide regarding oil exports.

The Haisla Nation reaffirmed its absolute opposition to oil pipelines and terminals within its territory. This stance aligns with that of Marilyn Slett, who stated that the Rights and Title Holders of the Central and North Coast and Haida Gwaii would never allow oil tankers on their coast. In contrast, Kitimat Mayor Phil Germuth maintained a neutral position, indicating the district would not rule out future oil proposals if they met environmental and community standards.

These discussions occur as the Alberta government seeks to fast-track an oil pipeline and has requested a partial repeal of the federal Oil Tanker Moratorium Act. B.C. Premier David Eby has dismissed Alberta's proposal as lacking legitimacy. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney is traveling to Calgary, fueling speculation that a formal memorandum of understanding regarding trade and infrastructure may be announced between the federal government and Alberta.
