Eastern European NATO Allies Offer to Fund U.S. Troops

Eastern European NATO members are offering to cover more costs for U.S. troops to prevent military withdrawals during a Department of Defense presence review.

Eastern European NATO members are offering to cover increased costs for U.S. troops stationed on their soil to prevent the Donald Trump administration from reducing its military footprint in the region. This initiative follows the launch of a six-month review by the United States Department of Defense into its European military presence, which is scheduled to conclude in December.

As part of the review, the U.S. issued a questionnaire to allies regarding their spending with U.S. defense contractors and their public support for the president's foreign policy. European capitals have characterized the questionnaire as an attempt to force ideological alignment in exchange for security, particularly amid tensions over the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. Finland's President Alexander Stubb noted that while there are areas of disagreement with the U.S., he does not view the approach as pressure but rather as the way the current administration operates.

The U.S. has already announced the withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany and cuts to strategic assets, including drones and bombers. However, the administration has pledged to send additional troops to Poland following the election of President Karol Nawrocki. U.S. Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby is scheduled to meet with NATO allies in Brussels on August 27 to discuss these developments.
