Trump Administration Threatens Smithsonian Funding Over Content Review

The Trump administration has threatened to withhold congressionally authorized federal funding from the Smithsonian Institution if the organization does not comply with a sweeping content review. In a letter dated December 18, White House officials demanded that the museum system provide internal records—including curatorial manuals, gallery labels, and exhibition plans—by January 13, 2026.

The review stems from a March executive order titled "Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History," which aims to remove "ideological indoctrination or divisive narratives" and ensure museums celebrate "American exceptionalism" ahead of the United States' 250th anniversary. Administration officials claim some exhibits portray Western values as "inherently harmful and oppressive" and the U.S. as "inherently racist, sexist, oppressive, or otherwise irredeemably flawed.

Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III responded by reaffirming the institution's independence and commitment to sharing information, though he attributed documentation delays to a recent 43-day government shutdown. The federal government provides approximately 62% to 66% of the Smithsonian's budget, giving the administration significant financial leverage. This conflict follows a previous attempt by the president to fire National Portrait Gallery director Kim Sajet, who subsequently resigned.
