Russia Conducts Missile Tests Near Disputed Kuril Islands
Russia's Pacific Fleet launched Bastion missiles off the Southern Kurils following Vladimir Putin's first visit to Etorofu Island and subsequent diplomatic protests from Japan.
The Pacific Fleet of Russia conducted a missile exercise off the Southern Kurils, simulating attacks on enemy vessels. The operation utilized a Bastion surface-to-ship missile system deployed to Etorofu Island, supported by the nuclear-powered submarine Omsk and the guided missile cruiser Varyag. Russian military officials reported that all targets were successfully hit at ranges of at least 300 kilometers.
This military activity follows a visit to Etorofu Island by President Vladimir Putin on August 13, the first such visit by a Russian president. The trip triggered a formal protest from the Government of Japan, which claims the islands were illegally seized in 1945. In response to the Japanese protest, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation summoned Japanese Ambassador Akira Muto.
Diplomatic relations between the two nations remain strained due to sanctions imposed by Japan following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The recent missile tests and presidential visit have further intensified territorial tensions over the islands, which Japan refers to as the Northern Territories.
