Wang Yi Urges SCO to Resolve Global Hotspot Issues

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi proposed a four-point plan to resolve international and regional hotspot issues during the Meeting of the Council of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan, on July 24, 2026. Wang urged the organization to uphold the "Shanghai Spirit" and synchronize national development strategies with regional cooperation to build a multipolar world. The meeting concluded with the adoption of a ministerial statement and resolutions preparing for the upcoming Bishkek Summit.

On the sidelines of the summit, Wang met with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi to address renewed tensions in the Middle East and the Gulf region. Wang specifically highlighted the need to manage issues concerning the Strait of Hormuz and called for the resumption of a memorandum of understanding signed over a month prior, stating that "the door to negotiations, once opened, should not be closed."

Araghchi affirmed Iran's willingness to negotiate and requested that the United States honor its commitments and exercise restraint to reach a reasonable solution. He also expressed gratitude for China's impartial role in promoting peace and de-escalating regional conflict.
