Courts Block Trump Administration Requests for Unredacted Voter Rolls

Federal courts have blocked efforts by the Donald Trump administration to compel states to provide unredacted voter rolls. In the most recent defeat, U.S. District Judge Susan Brnovich dismissed a Justice Department lawsuit in Arizona, ruling that the government failed to demonstrate a legal requirement for the data or explain why unredacted information was essential. This decision marks the sixth such defeat in 2026, following similar rulings in California, Massachusetts, Michigan, Oregon, and Rhode Island.

The United States Department of Justice cited the Civil Rights Act of 1960 to justify its requests, arguing that the data is necessary to remove deceased persons and non-citizens to ensure election integrity. However, judges have consistently pushed back against this interpretation. In the California case, Judge David Carter ruled that the request exceeded congressional intent, suggesting the government was attempting to use civil rights legislation to amass confidential data through executive fiat.

White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson defended the litigation, stating the president is committed to ensuring voter rolls are free of errors and unlawfully registered non-citizens. These legal challenges occur alongside broader administration goals to nationalize elections and implement executive orders restricting registration and mail-in voting. The Justice Department is currently appealing several of its losses and may bring the cases before the Supreme Court to resolve the conflict between federal oversight and state data privacy.
