Thomas Massie Introduces Bill to Audit U.S. Gold Reserves

Representative Thomas Massie introduced legislation mandating a comprehensive audit of U.S. gold reserves, including those held at Fort Knox.

Representative Thomas Massie introduced the Gold Reserve Transparency Act of 2025 on June 6 to mandate a comprehensive audit of gold reserves held by the United States. Co-sponsored by Representatives Warren Davidson, Addison McDowell, and Troy Nehls, the bill would grant the Government Accountability Office and independent third-party auditors access to all public and private depositories, including Fort Knox.

The legislation requires full disclosure of all gold-related transactions from the last 50 years and proposes audits every five years. This move follows a February statement from President Donald Trump, who said the government would go into Fort Knox to verify the gold.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent maintains that annual audits are conducted and that all gold was accounted for as of September 30, 2024. However, critics and independent organizations argue that a full physical audit has not occurred since 1974 and that previous checks failed to verify purity or serial numbers.
