Anthropic Raises $65 Billion and Surpasses OpenAI in Value

Anthropic reached a $965 billion valuation after a $65 billion funding round, overtaking OpenAI in market value and annualized revenue.

AI developer Anthropic became the world's most valuable privately held AI company on May 28, 2026, after closing a $65 billion Series H funding round. This pushed the company's post-money valuation to $965 billion, surpassing its rival OpenAI, which was valued at $852 billion in March. Anthropic also reported an annualized revenue run rate of $47 billion, exceeding OpenAI's estimated $30 billion run rate. The funding round was led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer Investment Group, Greenoaks Capital, and Sequoia Capital, with significant contributions from Amazon and Alphabet Inc.

Concurrent with the funding, the company launched Claude Opus 4.8 and announced plans to widely release AI models with cybersecurity capabilities comparable to its restricted Mythos model in the coming weeks. To support this growth, Anthropic secured massive compute agreements, including 5 gigawatts of capacity with Amazon, 5 gigawatts of TPU capacity with Google and Broadcom, and GPU access via SpaceX's Colossus data centers. Strategic infrastructure partners also included chipmakers Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and Micron Technology.

Despite its financial success, Anthropic is embroiled in a legal battle with the U.S. government. The company sued the Department of Defense after Secretary Pete Hegseth designated it a supply chain risk, a move following President Donald Trump's February order for U.S. agencies to stop using Claude. The company maintains this designation is retaliation for refusing the military unrestricted access to its models. Anthropic and OpenAI are both expected to pursue initial public offerings as soon as fall 2026.
