Israel Records High Voter Turnout in General Election

Israel held a general election on October 27 with record voter turnout as citizens voted on the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Cabinet of Israel conducted a general election on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, marking the first national vote since the October 7, 2023, attacks. The election served as a referendum on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, specifically regarding his responsibility for and response to the Hamas attacks. Final results determining the country's next leader may take days or weeks to materialize.

Voter participation reached unprecedented levels. The Central Elections Committee reported a 74.3% turnout with 5,449,277 ballots cast by 8 p.m. local time, an increase from the 66.4% seen in previous elections, while other reports characterized the turnout as reaching 77%.

Amid the electoral process, the Palestinian National Authority's observer mission in Geneva condemned Israel for an alleged refusal to cooperate with the U.N. Human Rights Council and demanded an end to its "unlawful occupation." Critics of the Palestinian Authority responded by noting that President Mahmoud Abbas has not held elections since 2005 and issued a decree on October 10 postponing elections that were originally scheduled for November 28. This contrast has led some observers to argue that the two-state solution is no longer viable due to the absence of a democratic partner.
