Democratic States Form Health Coalitions to Bypass Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Health officials from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and five New England states met to establish a regional agency for independent vaccine recommendations. This initiative aims to bypass the United States Department of Health and Human Services under Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has reportedly slashed research into cancer and autoimmune diseases and forced out top scientists. The move follows firings and resignations at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and a reversal of Kennedy's previous pledges not to remove vaccines.

Individual state leaders have implemented specific protections. Governor Kathy Hochul of New York signed an executive order protecting vaccine access, and Governor JB Pritzker of Illinois is exploring ways to stockpile Covid-19 shots. In Massachusetts, Governor Maura Healey is requiring insurers to cover injections recommended by the state health department regardless of federal guidelines. Additionally, a separate coalition comprising California, Washington, Oregon, and Hawaii has formed to issue its own immunization guidance.

These actions are part of a broader ideological separation between Democratic-led states and the federal government, mirroring previous independent efforts such as California's 2022 gas-car phase-out. Democratic governors are leveraging these public health disputes ahead of the 2026 midterms. Meanwhile, some conservative figures, including former Texas Republican Party chair Allen West, have suggested forming a union of conservative states.
