Israel Threatens Gaza Strikes Over Kite Launches

The Israel Defense Forces conducted a series of strikes across the Gaza Strip between August 22 and August 25, 2026, targeting Hamas commanders and infrastructure. These operations resulted in the deaths of several high-ranking members, including weapons-production commander Ismail Abu Ful in Maghazi and Nukhba Force members Mohammad Abd al-Nasser Jabr Abu Asaad and Sharif al-Hasanat in Deir al-Balah. The military accused Hamas of violating a ceasefire by using civilian infrastructure, including an international aid distribution point, to rebuild armed capabilities.

Simultaneously, Israel issued a three-day deadline for Hamas to stop launching kites and balloons into the Negev, including Kibbutz Nahal Oz. Defense Minister Israel Katz classified these launches as an act of war, mandating a zero-tolerance policy where such devices are treated identically to drones regardless of whether they carry explosives. While Israeli military sources acknowledged the kites contained no suspicious materials and appeared to be flown by children, Katz ordered a forceful response to prevent further incidents.

Hamas denied responsibility for the launches, asserting the kites are toys flown by children in displacement camps. The group accused Israel of using the incidents as a pretext to justify continued aggression despite the ceasefire agreed upon last October.
