Donald Trump Demands Iran Pay Reparations for Decades of Violence

President Donald Trump announced on August 11, 2026, that the United States will seek financial reparations from Iran as a requirement for any future peace negotiations. This demand serves as a counter-proposal to Tehran's own request for compensation regarding damages incurred during a five-month war launched by the U.S. and Israel to end Iran's nuclear program and topple its government.

Trump is demanding payments for attacks on U.S. targets over the last two decades, specifically citing the October 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen. He also called for compensation for families of Iranian protesters killed over the last 50 years and for deaths and damage in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Gaza. These claims contradict findings by the Federal Bureau of Investigations, which attributed the USS Cole bombing to al-Qaeda rather than Iran.

The diplomatic standoff occurs amid a broader military conflict involving a U.S. blockade of Iranian ports and Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has caused global fuel prices to surge. While Trump asserted that the U.S. Navy maintains a steel wall blockade and 100 percent control of the strait, Iranian officials, including Mohsen Rezaei, stated the waterway will remain closed until the U.S. ends sanctions and military threats. Iran has reportedly neared a deal with Oman to reopen the strait, but maintains that U.S. policy changes are a prerequisite.

Separately, U.S. CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper and Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir reaffirmed their strategic military partnership. Reports also emerged that the U.S. Secret Service recently used a catering truck deception to evacuate Trump from Turkey following a credible Iranian assassination threat.
