Ron Johnson Leads Push to Delay GOP Leadership Elections

Senator Ron Johnson is gathering signatures to postpone Senate Republican leadership elections to conduct an autopsy of the party's midterm election losses.

Senator Ron Johnson is leading an effort to postpone Senate Republican leadership elections scheduled for next Tuesday following a significant midterm defeat in which Democrats flipped at least seven GOP-held seats. Johnson and several colleagues sent a letter to Senate Republican Conference Chairman Tom Cotton arguing that proceeding with the vote without a robust evaluation of the losses would be political malpractice.

Johnson is seeking a conference-wide meeting to discuss a new governing model and a strategy to counter Democrats. The effort has gained support from Senators Rick Scott, John Kennedy, and Mike Lee. Under conference rules, a special meeting must be called if five senators request it in writing; Senator Kennedy confirmed he signed the letter and noted that Johnson has secured the necessary signatures to stall the election.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune remains the sole candidate for the leadership position and is expected to retain his post, though some Republicans have called for him to step down. The push for a delay comes as the party awaits final results from outstanding races in Alaska and Mississippi. Separately, House Speaker Mike Johnson announced he will not seek the House Minority Leader position, with reports indicating Jim Jordan will run for the role.
