Singaporean Ship GFS Pride Sinks in Strait of Hormuz

The Singapore-flagged container ship GFS Pride sank in the Strait of Hormuz after a fire, with conflicting reports on whether projectiles or mines caused the disaster.

The Singapore-flagged container ship GFS Pride sank in the Strait of Hormuz on October 14, 2026, following an onboard fire. All 21 crew members were safely evacuated from the vessel. The sinking released a large volume of cargo, including French perfumes and iPhones, which Iranian fishermen attempted to recover from the water.

Conflicting accounts emerged regarding the cause of the sinking. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore reported that the vessel was struck by unknown projectiles. Conversely, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed the ship hit a sea mine after entering a route they characterized as unauthorised and dangerous.

The incident occurred during an ongoing conflict that began in February, which has resulted in the closure of the strait and the loss of multiple vessels. Brigadier General Mohammad Akraminia of the Iranian army stated that the waterway would only reopen if the United States withdrew from the region. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump declared the waterway American territory and claimed that mines had been removed.
