Rahul Gandhi Postpones Impeachment Protest Amid BJP Counter-Rally Plans
Rahul Gandhi postponed a public impeachment program against the Chief Election Commissioner due to rain, while the BJP organized a counter-protest for November 1.
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi postponed a public impeachment program against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to October 31, citing rain and the discomfort of senior participants. The move is part of a broader effort by the Congress-led INDIA bloc to demand Kumar's resignation over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, culminating in a planned Chalo Dilli Ramlila March on November 1 at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi.
Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and the Chief Election Commissioner of the "demolition of Indian democracy." The Bharatiya Janata Party dismissed these efforts as expressions of frustration and questioned the organizational unity of the opposition bloc.
BJP leaders specifically criticized the November 1 date for coinciding with the anniversary of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, suggesting the opposition lacked sensitivity toward the date's sombre significance. To counter the opposition's rally, the BJP is organizing its own march in the Hari Nagar area of Delhi on November 1, targeting a turnout of 5,000 people, including members of the Sikh community.
