Ron DeSantis Calls GOP Midterm Losses Extinction-Level Event
Governor Ron DeSantis characterized Republican losses in the 2026 midterms as a political catastrophe after the party lost control of the U.S. House and Senate.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the Republican Party's losses in the 2026 midterm elections as the political equivalent of a meteor strike and close to an extinction-level event. Following the GOP's loss of control over both the U.S. House and Senate, DeSantis stated the defeat was the most severe the party has faced in roughly 100 years.
DeSantis attributed the national failure to voter frustration over inflation and a lack of productivity in Washington. He specifically criticized congressional Republicans for failing to ban stock trading, refusing to release Jeffrey Epstein-related records, and failing to eliminate the H-1B visa program. He warned that these losses could cripple President Donald Trump's agenda and lead to years of legislative gridlock.
While DeSantis called Florida the last main anchor standing for the GOP, the party lost its supermajority in the Florida state Legislature, with Democrats gaining approximately 15 seats in the Florida House. DeSantis blamed former Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez for these state-level losses. Despite the national trend, Republican Byron Donalds won the race to succeed DeSantis as Governor of Florida. DeSantis also highlighted extraordinary losses in Texas as a critical blow to the party's national viability.
