Political leaders and campaign organizations in Nigeria are demanding transparency regarding the whereabouts of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has failed to return to Abuja after a working vacation in Europe. President Tinubu departed Nigeria on August 30, 2026, for a three-week trip, but he has not resumed his executive duties despite the expiration of that timeframe six days ago.
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, criticized the President's absence from three consecutive United Nations General Assemblies. Following an address by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama at the 81st UNGA in New York, Obi argued that the leadership void is detrimental as Nigeria faces severe economic and security challenges. While Vice President Kashim Shettima led the Nigerian delegation to the assembly, Obi stated that deputy representation does not resolve the issue of governance continuity.
The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council also issued a demand for full disclosure from the Presidency. The council argued that the lack of public information regarding the reasons for the extended stay creates uncertainty at the highest level of government. The organization questioned who is currently exercising presidential authority while the country faces widespread hardship and persistent security pressures.
