China Warns US Over Dystopian Military AI Use
China warned the United States that unrestricted military AI use risks a Terminator-like future after the US blacklisted AI firm Anthropic over ethical disputes.
The Ministry of National Defense of the People's Republic of China warned the United States on March 11, 2026, that the unrestricted military application of artificial intelligence could lead to a "Terminator"-like dystopian future. Spokesman Jiang Bin stated that allowing algorithms to determine life and death erodes ethical restraints and accountability in war, risking what he called "technological runaway."
These warnings follow efforts by the Donald Trump administration to secure unconditional military use of AI startups. While the Pentagon cleared Elon Musk's Grok system for classified use, it blacklisted the AI firm Anthropic after the company refused to allow its Claude model to be used for mass surveillance and autonomous lethal warfare.
In response to Anthropic's refusal, President Donald Trump ordered federal agencies to cease using the company's technology. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth further designated Anthropic as a "Supply-Chain Risk to National Security," prohibiting commercial activity between military contractors and the firm, though the Pentagon was granted a six-month transition period. Beijing maintained that human primacy must be upheld and that all weapon systems remain under human control, citing the U.S. military's extensive use of AI in operations against Iran and Venezuela.
