Andy Burnham Hosts Jarrow Marcher Descendants at Downing Street

Prime Minister Andy Burnham hosted descendants of the 1936 Jarrow Marchers at 10 Downing Street to honor their legacy 90 years after they were snubbed.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham hosted approximately 60 descendants of the 1936 Jarrow Marchers at 10 Downing Street to honor their legacy and right the wrongs of the past. The original marchers walked nearly 300 miles from Tyneside to London to petition for a steelworks to replace a closed shipyard, but were turned away by then-Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin.

Accompanied by Jarrow MP Kate Osborne, the descendants brought a replica of the original petition to the VIP reception. Burnham stated that the courage and determination of the marchers would never be forgotten and expressed a commitment to ensuring the North East receives the attention it deserves from Westminster.
