The FBI report confirms that the 2025 murder rate is tied for the lowest since 1936. However, analysts point out that the downward trend began in 2022 during the Biden administration. Data also contradicts specific claims made by the president; while Trump claimed an 81% decline in violent crime in Washington, the actual decrease was 18%.

Adam Gelb, president of the Council on Criminal Justice, acknowledged the historic lows but stated that the exact causes for the decline remain unclear. While Gelb noted the trend deserves celebration, he emphasized that the reasons for the drop are less clear than the decline itself.
