Gina Hinojosa Protests Greg Abbott's Refusal to Debate
Democratic candidate Gina Hinojosa staged an empty-podium protest at the Texas Governor's Mansion after incumbent Greg Abbott declined multiple invitations to debate.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa staged a protest on Thursday morning outside the Texas Governor's Mansion in Austin, placing two podiums and a moderator to highlight incumbent Governor Greg Abbott's refusal to debate. Hinojosa accused Abbott of "hiding" from his record on electricity costs, health insurance, and bankruptcies, asserting that if he is not "man enough to debate me then he doesn’t deserve to be the governor of Texas."
Governor Greg Abbott declined the invitation and all other debate offers this cycle, spending the day visiting law enforcement in Huntsville and meeting constituents in East Texas. Abbott stated that his strategy is to connect with voters directly in their communities. His campaign dismissed the protest as a "circus" and claimed the event was insincere because the podiums were only accessible by stairs, effectively excluding a wheelchair user.
During the rally, independent write-in candidate Jenn Mack interrupted Hinojosa's speech to challenge both candidates' records before security escorted her away. The Abbott campaign later cited this interruption as evidence of hypocrisy and misogyny. In a counter-move, Abbott's team deployed a rolling billboard criticizing Hinojosa's voting record.
The confrontation occurs as the race tightens. Recent polling shows conflicting results, with a Marist University poll placing Abbott with a 4-point lead, while a Texas Politics Project poll indicates the candidates are effectively tied or that Hinojosa holds a slim 1-point lead.
