CFPB Chief Examiner Warns Staff Against Aggressive Firm Oversight

Chief Examiner Fatima Batie warned mid-level supervision staff at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) in a May 13 email that they would face the most unpleasant consequences if they were too aggressive or inflammatory during the oversight of financial firms. The warning arrived as the agency resumed inspections after a long hiatus and required staff to sign a humility pledge to ensure collaborative work with firms.

This shift follows a broader regulatory reorientation under the administration of President Donald Trump intended to reduce burdens on the finance sector. Former interim director Russell Vought noted that the agency recalibrated its approach to do as little damage as possible, while maintaining that they are sticking to the law.

Former staff and critics, including attorney Austin Hinkle, described Batie's warnings as pure intimidation. They argue that such directives could deter examiners from uncovering harmful violations at the financial institutions they are tasked with supervising.
