James Clyburn Wins 18th Term in South Carolina Election
Democratic Representative James Clyburn won reelection to South Carolina's 6th Congressional District, defeating Republican challenger John Peterson.
James Clyburn won reelection to South Carolina's 6th Congressional District on Tuesday, securing his 18th term in office. The Associated Press called the race at 8:37 p.m., confirming that the Democratic incumbent defeated Republican challenger John Peterson.
Clyburn has represented the district since 1992. His path to the general election included a landslide victory over Frederick R. Goodwin in the Democratic primary held in June.
The victory follows a summer of redistricting efforts led by President Donald Trump and Republicans intended to oust Clyburn from his seat. Those efforts failed after the South Carolina Senate ultimately dropped the plans to redraw the congressional map. The election results remain unofficial until they are certified in the coming days.
