US Military Loses 45 Reaper Drones in Iran Conflict

The United States Department of Defense lost approximately 45 MQ-9 Reaper drones during its conflict with Iran, representing roughly 25% of its prewar fleet. These losses, concentrated around the Strait of Hormuz, are estimated to cost taxpayers over $1.3 billion, with individual aircraft valued between $30 million and $50 million.

Lt. Gen. David Tabor reported to the Senate that the fleet had fallen to about 135 drones by May. While some aircraft were shot down by Iran and its proxies in Yemen and Iraq, others crashed after losing communication links.

In response to these losses, the military is phasing out the MQ-9 Reapers in favor of cheaper, swarm-capable attack reconnaissance drones. These developments occur alongside broader concerns regarding U.S. weapons stockpiles and the slow production capacity of THAAD interceptors.
