Trump Plans Michigan Visit Amid Canceled Joint Bridge Ceremony

President Donald Trump is planning a visit to Oakland County, Michigan, on Monday to campaign for endorsed gubernatorial candidate John James and U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers. This trip coincides with the official opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge to vehicle traffic.

The visit follows a diplomatic rift that led to the cancellation of a joint-nation celebration previously scheduled for Friday. The joint event was scrapped after the U.S. administration imposed new tariffs on Canada. In response, the Canadian government decided to hold a Canada-only opening ceremony on Friday.

The bridge project has been plagued by delays stemming from a broader trade war and disagreements over financing. Because the U.S. government declined to finance the project, a specific agreement was established allowing Canada to collect tolls to recoup its construction costs. The Windsor–Detroit Bridge Authority has confirmed that despite the political tensions, the bridge will open for traffic on Monday.
