Canada Plans Ban on Commercial Ties to West Bank Settlements

The Government of Canada is planning a ban on commercial ties that support Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, aligning itself with several European nations. The initiative targets the expansion of settlements that currently house more than 500,000 people, which Canadian foreign policy and international law view as roadblocks to peace.

Prime Minister Mark Carney advocated for a future two-state solution during a recent visit to the United Nations. The proposed ban follows this diplomatic push and seeks to limit economic support for settlement activity in the region.

While the move focuses on the West Bank, the policy context considers historical precedents such as the 2005 Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. That removal of settlers preceded the construction of Hamas tunnels and the 2023 massacre, suggesting that settlement removal alone may not provide a complete solution to the conflict.
