U.S. Markets Steady as Investors Await Federal Reserve Guidance
U.S. stock-index futures remained flat as investors await Federal Reserve interest rate signals and monitor oil price spikes following a tanker attack in the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. stock-index futures remained largely unchanged on Sunday as investors await guidance from the Federal Reserve regarding the interest rate outlook. Market participants are focusing on the upcoming release of the July Federal Open Market Committee meeting minutes on Wednesday and the annual symposium in Jackson Hole starting August 27.
Kevin Warsh, Chair of the Federal Reserve, has shifted away from the forward guidance style used by his predecessor, Jerome Powell. This change has prompted investors to rely more heavily on macroeconomic data to predict policy shifts. Simultaneously, investors are preparing for quarterly earnings reports from major retailers, including Walmart, Target, Home Depot, and Lowe's, to assess consumer health amid persistent inflation.
In the energy sector, West Texas Intermediate crude rose to approximately $82.61 a barrel. The price increase follows a reported attack on an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, which occurred as diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran to end hostilities have stalled.
