Andy Burnham Proposes Raising Top UK Income Tax Rate

Andy Burnham suggests increasing the top income tax rate to 50 percent, drawing warnings from tax experts regarding revenue efficiency and economic stability.

Andy Burnham suggested there is a case for raising the top rate of UK income tax from 45 percent to 50 percent for individuals earning over £125,140. The proposal aims to increase government revenue, but tax experts and accountants have cautioned against the move.

Analysts point to a previous three-year experiment with a 50 percent rate starting in April 2010, which they argue failed to generate significant revenue because high earners adjusted their behavior to avoid the tax. Robert Salter of Blick Rothenberg noted that a 1p increase in the additional rate would raise approximately £230 million, while a similar increase in the basic rate would generate about £7 billion.

Critics argue the policy is inefficient and could damage the perceived stability of a future government. Stephen Kenny of PKF Littlejohn stated that top earners are fatigued by recurring conversations about wealth and income tax rises, suggesting the current discourse is viewed by some as a joke.
