DC and Virginia Sue to Block Trump's Triumphal Arch

The District of Columbia and Virginia filed a lawsuit to stop President Donald Trump from building a 250-foot triumphal arch on federal land.

The Government of the District of Columbia and the Government of Virginia have filed a lawsuit to block the construction of a 250-foot triumphal arch proposed by Donald Trump. The plaintiffs argue the project is "flagrantly unlawful," alleging it violates the Commemorative Works Act, the Height of Buildings Act, and laws requiring congressional authorization for monuments on federal land.

Legal challenges cite immediate risks to the environment, traffic, and historic preservation. This lawsuit joins existing legal actions from Arlington County and Vietnam War veterans, who claim the structure would obstruct views of Arlington National Cemetery.

While the administration initially presented the arch as a personal monument, officials now justify the project as a national security measure. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth testified that the structure is necessary to mitigate drone attacks, a claim Judge Tanya S. Chutkan met with skepticism due to a lack of supporting evidence. The project awaits final approval from the National Capital Planning Commission next week.
