EU Naval Forces Board Russian Shadow Fleet Tanker

European Union naval forces intercepted and boarded the oil tanker MV SUN in the Mediterranean Sea to disrupt illegal Russian oil sales.

European Union naval forces under Operation EUNAVFOR MED Irini intercepted and boarded the oil tanker MV SUN in the Mediterranean Sea on August 30, 2026. The operation, executed by the Italian Navy ship Thaon di Revel west of Pantelleria, targeted the vessel as it traveled from Cotonou, Benin, to Istanbul, Turkey. EU forces boarded the ship to verify its flag following suspicions that it was sailing under a false flag in breach of international maritime law.

This action marks the sixth suspected shadow fleet vessel intercepted by EU operations in recent months. The effort aims to cut off illegal oil sales that fund Russia's war in Ukraine, following a recent EU sanctions package that allows member states to sell seized cargo from such vessels. EU defense ministers are scheduled to meet in Ireland on Tuesday to further discuss measures targeting the shadow fleet.

Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, condemned the interceptions as piracy and robbery. He warned in mid-August that Russian forces would act wherever they deem necessary and appropriate, stating that Russia would be forced to respond in kind to these actions.
