Trump Ends Hostilities as Iran Imposes Strait of Hormuz Tolls

Donald Trump is winding down military action against Iran while the Iranian parliament institutionalizes transit fees and restrictions for ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

President Donald Trump has indicated he will end hostilities with Iran after 32 days of conflict, opting to degrade Iranian naval and missile capabilities rather than launch a military mission to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Trump determined that reopening the maritime chokepoint would exceed his four-to-six-week timeline and urged allies to secure the waterway independently, stating the U.S. would no longer provide assistance.

In response to the conflict, the Iranian parliament passed legislation to institutionalize transit fees for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Supervised by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the new regime establishes a controlled access corridor north of Larak Island. Vessels must provide crew and destination data to receive transit codes and escorts. The law explicitly bans ships from the United States, Israel, and nations participating in anti-Iranian sanctions, with the Iranian military threatening missile strikes against violators. Some nations, including India and Malaysia, have reportedly secured exceptions.

Diplomatically, the Government of Iran is drafting a navigation protocol to be negotiated with Oman to monitor maritime traffic and ensure safe passage. While Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed the receipt of messages from U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, he stated these exchanges do not constitute formal negotiations. Market analysts are monitoring the Iran-Oman collaboration as a potential signal of a broader ceasefire, though official negotiations remain unconfirmed.
