Israel Strikes Hezbollah Cell as Lebanese President Visits Washington
The Israel Defense Forces struck a Hezbollah drone cell in Lebanon while President Joseph Aoun met Donald Trump to discuss a peace framework.
The Israel Defense Forces conducted an airstrike against a Hezbollah drone cell near Tebnit in southern Lebanon on July 18, 2026. The Israeli Air Force targeted the group after soldiers spotted fighters operating drones near Israeli troops. Military officials stated the action was necessary to remove threats to soldiers and civilians, characterizing the drone operations as a violation of ceasefire understandings.
These military actions coincided with a mass funeral in Majdal Selm, where Hezbollah buried 44 people, including 39 fighters. The instability follows a period of relative calm established by a June 17 memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran.
Simultaneously, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun traveled to Washington for a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump. The meeting aimed to advance a 14-point Trilateral Framework Agreement signed June 26, which proposes the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the deployment of the Lebanese army in southern Lebanon. The deal requires the disarmament of Hezbollah, a condition the group has rejected.
Hezbollah responded to the diplomatic push by escalating political tensions within Lebanon. Lawmakers criticized the proposed pilot zones in the south, which would remove both Israeli and Hezbollah military presence. One lawmaker declared that ties with the Lebanese government have been severed, suggesting that the possibility of reaching an understanding no longer exists.
