Vladimir Putin Warns Ukraine of Catastrophic Economic Retaliation
Vladimir Putin threatened to target Ukraine's most sensitive economic sectors after Ukrainian drone strikes hit Russian oil refineries and warehouses.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Saturday that Moscow is considering a catastrophic scenario for Ukraine in response to escalated drone strikes against Russian economic infrastructure, including warehouses and oil refineries. Putin stated that the Government of Ukraine opened a Pandora’s box by targeting these assets and is now reaping the retaliation.
Russia has already targeted Ukrainian economic infrastructure, specifically disrupting grain exports via the Black Sea. Putin asserted that these strikes are effective and timely, claiming they disrupt Ukraine's ability to deliver ammunition and rotate personnel along the frontline. Despite these disruptions, he maintained that Russia can replace Ukrainian exports and that there will be no global food shortages.
These threats follow a major Russian airstrike on August 20 that killed 16 people and injured more than 40 in Kyiv and the surrounding region. While Putin warned of further strikes on sensitive economic sectors, he stated that Moscow remains open to peace negotiations, provided they are based on realities on the ground rather than exotic proposals submitted through intermediaries.
