Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi Strengthens India-Tanzania Strategic Ties

President Hussein Ali Mwinyi of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council visited India on July 19, 2026, to advance the India-Tanzania Strategic Partnership. The visit began in Chennai, where Mwinyi served as the Chief Guest for the 63rd Convocation Ceremony of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras.

In New Delhi, Mwinyi held a series of high-level diplomatic meetings. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar discussed expanding bilateral cooperation in artificial intelligence, digital technology, healthcare, water supply, and capacity building. Later, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan hosted the president at the Uprashtrapati Bhawan to reaffirm partnerships in trade, investment, tourism, and the blue economy.

Central to the discussions was the IIT Madras Zanzibar campus, India's first overseas IIT campus. Both leaders cited the institution as a flagship example of India's commitment to Africa's development priorities. Mwinyi expressed appreciation for Indian scholarships and water projects, describing the campus as a landmark initiative in bilateral educational cooperation. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that the visit reflects growing momentum and shared priorities between the two nations as partners in the Global South.
