Rotimi Amaechi Challenges Tinubu Over Economic Claims Ahead of 2027
Rotimi Amaechi challenged President Bola Tinubu's claims of prosperity, offering to withdraw his vice presidential candidacy if petrol prices drop to 600 naira per litre.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu met with Abdulaziz Yari, Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, in Lagos on October 1, 2026. The meeting focused on party unity and strategy for the 2027 general elections, which the Independent National Electoral Commission has scheduled for January 16, 2027.
During this period, Rotimi Amaechi, the Vice Presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress on a ticket with Atiku Abubakar, publicly disputed the president's assertion that Nigeria has entered an "age of prosperity." Speaking on Channels Television, Amaechi pointed to the high cost of commodities and transportation as evidence against the administration's economic narrative.
Amaechi pledged to withdraw from the African Democratic Congress ticket and campaign for Tinubu if the price of petrol drops to 600 naira per litre. He questioned whether any prices had actually decreased or if anything had changed for the citizens.
