Modi Concludes Three-Nation Indo-Pacific Tour with Strategic Pacts
Prime Minister Narendra Modi strengthened ties with Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand through landmark defense, energy, and trade agreements during a diplomatic tour in July 2026.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted a strategic three-nation tour of Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand from July 6 to 11, 2026, to advance India's Act East policy and MAHASAGAR vision. The tour focused on maritime security, critical mineral supply chains, and the promotion of a rules-based Indo-Pacific order.
In Indonesia, Modi met President Prabowo Subianto, who conferred upon him the Bintang Adipurna, the nation's highest honor. The two countries signed 20 agreements, including a $600 million defense package for BrahMos cruise missiles and Astra air-to-air missiles. They also agreed to jointly develop the Sabang port and launch a conservation project for the Prambanan Temple. Indonesia further integrated Indian digital infrastructure by adopting the ONDC-inspired Indonesia Open Network and linking its QRIS payment system with India's UPI.
In Australia, Modi co-chaired the third India-Australia Annual Leaders' Summit with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Melbourne. The summit yielded 18 outcomes, most notably the operationalization of Australian uranium exports to India and a Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation. Economic ties were bolstered by a 500 million Australian Dollar investment from AustralianSuper into India's National Investment and Infrastructure Fund and a new sports collaboration roadmap launched at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The tour concluded in Auckland, New Zealand, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 40 years. Modi and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon elevated the relationship to a strategic partnership, setting a goal to double bilateral trade to 7 billion New Zealand dollars by 2030. They signed a reciprocal logistics support pact between the Indian Navy and the New Zealand Defence Force and advanced the implementation of a Free Trade Agreement signed in April 2026.
