China Hits Goal of 50,000 U.S. Youth Exchange Visitors

China has achieved its goal of inviting 50,000 young Americans to visit for exchange and study programs, reaching the target two and a half years ahead of the original five-year schedule. Launched in November 2023, the initiative sought to bolster people-to-people ties through cultural, academic, and technological programs. Participants from all 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., visited all 31 provincial-level regions on the Chinese mainland, including Hong Kong and Macao.

Activities under the program included sports exchanges, voyages on the China-U.S. Youth Friendship vessel, and visits to technology firms such as Xiaomi and Baidu. The Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China has pledged to expand these bilateral exchanges and transition short-term programs into long-term cooperation to maintain diplomatic momentum.

On the eve of a state visit to the U.S., Xi Jinping replied to a letter from students at 10 U.S. universities, emphasizing that youth exchanges are an irreplaceable tool for breaking down stereotypes and narrowing perception gaps. He stated that the future of the relationship depends on grassroots connections and urged students to foster mutual understanding to ensure the long-term development of bilateral relations.
