Donald Trump Claims Tariff Threats Averted India-Pakistan War
Donald Trump claimed he ended a military confrontation between India and Pakistan by threatening 250 percent trade tariffs, a claim the Indian government disputes.
President Donald Trump claimed during a campaign rally in Florida that he prevented a full-scale war between India and Pakistan by threatening both nuclear-armed nations with 250 percent trade tariffs. Trump asserted that these economic ultimatums forced the two countries to stop shooting and ended the hostilities, noting that 11 planes were shot during the conflict.
The Government of India disputed Trump's account of the aircraft losses and rejected the notion of external mediation. Indian officials stated that the ceasefire during Operation Sindoor was reached on May 10 of the previous year after the Director General of Military Operations for Pakistan requested a halt in military action.
Operation Sindoor was a targeted Indian military response launched on May 7 following an April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam. The operation aimed to destroy terror infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. While Trump characterized the resolution as a result of his personal intervention, India maintains the ceasefire was a bilateral military arrangement.
