Donald Trump Backs Federal Tax Credits for Film Production

President Donald Trump announced his support for federal tax credits to incentivize film and television production within the United States on Monday. In a post on Truth Social, Trump urged Congress to immediately approve a Federal Production Incentive to create entertainment jobs and reverse the trend of productions moving to overseas hubs in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Hungary.

The proposal follows meetings between Trump and Jon Voight, a special ambassador to Hollywood tasked with returning production to the U.S. This approach marks a shift in strategy from the president's previous suggestions to impose tariffs on foreign-made films. While Trump did not specify a credit percentage, industry leaders have suggested a federal credit of 15% to 20% to increase domestic competitiveness.

The Motion Picture Association and various labor unions support the move, arguing it will counter a downturn in television series creation and the exodus of production. Trump stated that the cost of these tax incentives would be offset tenfold by revenue flowing into the Treasury, and he called for the effort to be bipartisan, noting that money is currently being lost in California and other largely blue states.
