US Suspends Ukraine Military Aid for Capability Review

The United States Department of Defense has suspended military assistance to Ukraine and several other nations to conduct a comprehensive capability review. This evaluation aims to analyze the distribution of munitions and ensure that foreign aid does not compromise U.S. military capabilities or national interests. Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell stated the review creates a framework to align aid with defense priorities and supports the America First agenda.

The suspension affects critical resources, including missiles, artillery shells, and air defense systems. U.S. envoy to NATO Matthew Whitaker characterized the move as a reflection of President Donald Trump's policy priorities. Since the 2022 Russian invasion, the U.S. has provided nearly $66 billion in security assistance, primarily through presidential drawdown authority.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that while he understands the U.S. prioritizing its own interests, Ukraine cannot survive in the short term without this support. In response, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys urged European Union and NATO partners to maintain active support to offset the loss. European NATO members have pledged over 35 billion euros in aid and vowed to increase military spending to 5% of GDP over the next decade. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that this increased financial burden could lead to the collapse of the organization.
