Green Party Warns Labour Could Lose 50 Seats Over Drilling

The Green Party claims the Labour government risks losing 50 seats if it approves new North Sea oil and gas drilling licenses.

The Green Party warned that the Labour government could lose up to 50 seats in the next general election if it approves new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea. This warning follows internal research suggesting voters in key battleground constituencies are demanding urgent climate action after a summer of record heatwaves, wildfires, and the worst drought since 1976.

The Green Party specifically opposes the issuance of new licenses for the Jackdaw gasfield and the Rosebank oilfield. Deputy leader Rachel Millward criticized the government's direction, suggesting the Prime Minister is more interested in appealing to Donald Trump than taking bold action to ensure safety.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham responded by stating he will be pragmatic regarding oil and gas, noting that decisions on new drilling will be made in due course. The Labour Party dismissed the Green Party's projections as utter fantasy, arguing that the number of seats the Greens are projected to win has actually decreased since Burnham took office.
